What is a chimney cap?
A chimney cap is a metal hood with mesh sides that sits over the flue and keeps rain, snow, animals and downdraft out, while its mesh holds sparks in. A single-flue cap clamps or screws to one flue tile. It is the cheapest component on a chimney and it protects the most expensive ones.
Stainless steel generally outlasts galvanized, and a rusted or loose cap is usually replaced rather than repaired.
