What is a top-sealing damper?
A top-sealing damper is mounted at the top of the flue with a gasket seal and a cable running down to the firebox. It closes the flue at the top, which keeps conditioned air in and weather and animals out better than a throat damper does, and it doubles as a rain cap.
When is it actually needed?
When a cast-in throat damper has failed, when downdraft or heat loss is the complaint, or when a cap is needed anyway.
