What is a chimney sweep?
A chimney sweep is the mechanical cleaning of the flue: brushes or rotary heads run through the chimney to bring down soot and creosote, with a vacuum and drop cloths holding the dust. A sweep removes deposits; it does not by itself tell you the chimney is sound.
Most companies do a Level 1 inspection on the same visit, but the two are separate jobs and belong on the invoice separately.
When is it actually needed?
When deposits build to a depth worth removing — the trade's working rule is about an eighth of an inch of creosote — or when the yearly inspection says so.
