What is a Level 2 chimney inspection?
A Level 2 inspection is everything in a Level 1, plus the parts nobody looks at in an ordinary year: accessible attics, crawl spaces and basements where the chimney passes through, and an internal look at the full length of the flue, normally with a camera. It exists to find damage that a visual check from the hearth cannot see.
When is it actually needed?
NFPA 211 puts three triggers on a Level 2: the sale or transfer of the property, a change to the system — a different fuel, a different flue size or material, a new or different appliance — and any event that could have damaged the chimney, such as a chimney fire, an earthquake or a severe storm.
