Stove & insert installation: is a credential required in North Carolina?

#stove-installNONE
Credential
No credential for freestanding wood/pellet stoves or inserts — G.S. 87-21(a)(4) defines heating group three as a direct heating/cooling system where combustion products exchange heat with building air 'using an air distribution system of ducts', and (a)(2) group one as steam/vapor/hot-water systems, so a duct-less freestanding stove falls outside the P-H-FS Board's article; CAPTURE EDGES: central solid-fuel equipment IS licensed work (hydronic wood/coal boiler = H-1; ducted wood furnace = H-2/H-3) — NC joins the WV/KY/ME heat-role-scoped family with the line drawn at the DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM; GC license only >= $40,000; permits local; CODE CORRECTION: the 2018 NC Residential Code (2015 IRC base — REF) is still in force; S.L. 2025-2 § 5.12(b) makes the 2024 code effective only 12 months after the State Fire Marshal certifies publication and a fully constituted Residential Code Council — OSFM's June 2026 update: 'earliest possible date is May 1, 2027, but that has not been set' (the July row's '3/1/2027' is unsupported); S.L. 2025-63 did not change that trigger

Guaranty fund
Homeowners Recovery Fund (G.S. 87-15.5–.9): funded by $10 per-dwelling-unit fee at GC permit issuance ($9 to Board, $1 local; current collection status UNVERIFIED); trigger = dishonest or incompetent conduct by a GENERAL contractor (incl. license impersonators) constructing/altering a SINGLE-FAMILY dwelling; unsatisfied judgment + exhausted remedies required; NO statutory per-claim cap — Board has 'complete discretion' over amounts (payment is privilege, not right); NOT available against plumbing/heating/fuel-piping-only licensees
Workers' comp threshold
3+ employees regularly employed (G.S. 97-2(1)); sole props/partners/LLC members not employees, may elect in; corporate officers covered by default, may exclude via policy; TRAP: G.S. 97-19 — a contractor subletting work WITHOUT obtaining the sub's WC coverage certificate is liable for the sub's employees' injuries 'irrespective of whether such subcontractor has regularly in service fewer than three employees'

Before anyone goes on your roof

What should you ask a chimney company in North Carolina?

  1. Is your company a member of the National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG)?
  2. Does the technician coming to my home hold an individual NCSG certification, and which one?
  3. Does the technician hold a National Fireplace Institute (NFI) certification — and for which fuel: wood, gas, or pellet?
  4. What other certifications does the technician hold (for example, CSIA), and can I check them on the issuer's own roster?
  5. What state or local license or registration covers this work here, and what is the number?
  6. Will you send a certificate of insurance, dated and naming your company, before work starts?
  7. Which NFPA 211 inspection level — Level 1, 2, or 3 — are you performing, and why that level?
  8. Will you show me what you found — photos or video of the flue — in writing?

We take no fee from any certification body, guild, or contractor, and are not paid to mention anyone named.
